2011 Press Release

A sneak preview of the 2011 Corn Acoustics! Corn Maze was presented to the public at the 7th Annual Meadows of Dan Folk Fair on Saturday, August 20, 2011. Annual maze adventurers were excited to be the first to travel the intricate pathways during the fair. The Corn Acoustics! Corn Maze traditionally opens Labor Day Weekend at the Chinquapin Festival.

This year’s design by Sue Shelor, features the tuning heads of a guitar, fiddle, banjo and mandolin. Centered in the design are the initials LRB for Lonesome River Band in acknowledgement of the bluegrass bands approaching 30th anniversary. This is our 6th year with the maze, commented owner Sue Shelor, and we finally decided to put the farm name in the design. It took two and a half cases of orange spray paint and 40 hours of hard labor by myself and my husband to lay out and cut the design. The aerial photo was taken by Sammy Shelor from a two-seat helicopter piloted by Bills Helicopter Service based at Twin County Aviation in Hillsville, Virginia.

Once again the Shelors are working closely with the Blue Ridge Parkway Foundation as one of the locations of the Kids in Parks Track Trail. This years brochure features questions about the music of the Blue Ridge Mountains.

New this year is the Pick Your Own Fun Pumpkin Patch, a partnership between local farmer Dewayne Cassell and Mountain Meadow Farm. The patch consists of two varieties of pumpkins, one large and one small. Planted alongside the pumpkins are special gourds for Sue’s future gourd art work. The pumpkins will be available for picking toward the end of September through October on the weekends when the corn maze is open.

The Chinquapin Festival, held Labor Day Weekend, celebrates the official opening of the corn maze season. Sammy Shelor and Friends will be providing the musical entertainment at the festival, which runs Saturday through Monday 10 AM to 5 PM, rain or shine. Limited seating is available under the big tent and the promoter recommends bringing lawn chairs. Both the festival and the corn maze are located on Mountain Meadow Farm, 84 Concord Road, Meadows of Dan, Virginia. The Corn Acoustics! Corn Maze will be open on weekends from 10 AM to 5 PM from September through October, weather permitting. For weather information contact Sue Shelor at 276-952-5568.
